Everything Protego does
Grouped the way the app is, so you can find a setting here and then find it again on your device.
Filter
Choose what Protego hides while you browse Reddit.
Filter
The master switch. Turns all filtering on or off without touching your lists.
Filter Notifications
A brief on-page notice when posts are actually hidden. Three choices: Off (none), Standard (at most one per page), and Live (also shows one whenever newly loaded posts are filtered as you scroll).
Filter lists
Keywords
Hide posts with certain words in their title or body.
Communities
Hide a community’s posts from your feeds and search results while staying joined.
Users
Hide posts and comments from specific accounts.
Social Media
Hide link posts pointing to social media sites, using a ready-made list of platforms you switch on individually.
Domains
Hide link posts pointing to a specific site.
How the lists work
Wildcards
*stands for any text, sopolitic*catches politics and political.Number pattern
#matches any 1 to 3 digit number, so[#m]hides[30m]and[18m]alike.Groups
Gather related filters under one name and switch the whole group off at once.
Switch off without deleting
Any single filter can be turned off and left in place, ready to turn back on.
Not case sensitive
spoileralso matchesSpoilerand every other capitalization.Subdomains count separately
news.example.comis its own entry.Bulk select
Delete several filters at once, or add several to a group at once.
Keyword suggestions
When adding a keyword: pull terms trending in your region, describe a topic in your own words and get suggested keywords back, or add a ready-made Dating group (Men or Women) for dating posts. Suggestions your existing keywords already cover are flagged rather than duplicated.
Advanced
List Management
Export your filter lists to back them up or share them, import to merge a file’s items into your lists or replace the lists you pick, and erase lists you no longer want. Import reports the real number of items added.
Transform
Choose what Protego changes about Reddit’s pages.
Presets
Set up Protego in one tap, then fine-tune anything afterward. Each one builds on the one before it.
Off
All Transform settings are off.
Minimal
Hides ads, nudges, and signups.
Balanced
Also hides nags, awards, avatars, and flair.
Focused
Also hides scores and post thumbnails.
Nags & Promotions
Reddit pushes you toward its app, its accounts, and its advertisers.
Reddit app nudges
Reddit’s prompts to switch to its app: a banner, an Open App button in the top bar, and another in the sticky header on posts. Hiding them keeps your browsing in Safari.
Promoted posts & ads
Sponsored posts and ads mixed into feeds and comment pages. Protego hides them from view; it cannot stop Reddit from serving them.
Games on Reddit
Reddit’s built-in games and the prompts that point you to them.
Login & signup nudges
The sign-in popup, the Log In and Sign Up buttons, and the sidebar signup banner Reddit shows while you browse logged out. Hiding them also widens your feed.
Recommendations
Communities and posts Reddit suggests around your content: Popular Communities and Recent Posts in the sidebar, plus Related Posts and People Also Ask on a post. A community’s own About and Rules stay.
Reddit Answers
Reddit’s promotion of its AI answers: the glowing search bar with its Ask button, the answer block at the top of search results, and the sparkle Answers icon. Search keeps working.
Join buttons
The Join button on posts from communities you have not joined. Hiding it also removes the sign-in prompt it shows while you are logged out.
Votes, Awards & Badges
Reddit uses scores and rewards to keep you counting.
Vote buttons
The upvote and downvote arrows on posts and comments. Hiding them also removes the sign-in prompt they show while you are logged out.
Vote count
The score shown on posts and comments. Hide it for a feed that puts less weight on numbers.
Award buttons
The Award button in post and comment action rows.
Achievement badges
Reddit’s recognition pills, such as Top 1% Commenter, shown next to usernames, plus the Community Achievements section in a community’s sidebar.
Visual Clutter
Imagery and decoration compete with what you came to read.
Post thumbnails
The preview image on posts in your feeds. In card view, a post’s own photo or video stays. The post you open keeps its image.
Community & author avatars
The avatar beside a post’s community or author name, in feeds, page headers, and the sidebar’s community lists. Your own account avatar stays.
Comment avatars
Commenter avatars in threads, replaced with a plain gray circle so the reply lines stay easy to follow.
Community status emoji
The status emoji some communities set beside their name, shown on posts and community pages.
Community banners
The wide banner image across the top of a community’s page.
User flair
The tag beside a username: the poster’s on a post, the commenter’s in a thread.
Post flair
A post’s own category tag, shown under the title on new Reddit and in the title on old Reddit.
Comment Threads
Choose how Protego treats each comment type: visible, collapsed, or hidden.
Pinned Moderator Comments
The stickied moderator comment at the top of a thread, AutoModerator’s included.
Comments with Media
Comments carrying an image, GIF, or video.
Feed & Layout
Change the layout Reddit opens in and how its feeds behave.
Show author on feeds
Reddit hides who posted on the home, popular, and news feeds. Turn this on to show the author’s username next to the community name.
Post sort order
Reddit opens most feeds sorted by Best. Choose Hot, New, Top, Rising, or Controversial to open community, home, popular, and news feeds with it instead. Top and Controversial take a time window: Now, Today, This Week, This Month, This Year, or All Time. A sort you pick on Reddit itself still wins.
Old Reddit
Redirect to old.reddit.com
Sends every Reddit link to the classic old.reddit.com layout.
Create posts on new Reddit
Creating a post opens new Reddit’s composer, which supports photos, videos, galleries, polls, and drafts, then returns you to old Reddit. Old Reddit’s own form only supports links and text.
Never Ending Feed
Loads the next page automatically as you reach the bottom of a feed, so you can keep scrolling without clicking next.
Auto-expand images
Expands image and gallery posts in old Reddit feeds without tapping the expand button.
Experimental
Disable For You feed
Reddit is testing a For You home feed and makes it the default. Turn this on to switch home back to the Following feed of the communities you have joined, and keep it there.
Limits
Choose how much of Reddit stays reachable in Safari. Blocked pages stop before they load, so there is nothing to scroll.
The ladder
A single choice. Each level also blocks everything the levels above it block.
Off
Nothing is blocked.
Block Home & Popular
Everything else stays open.
Block all main feeds
Communities and posts stay open.
Allow posts only
Only direct links to posts are allowed.
Block everything
All of Reddit is blocked.
Automate with a Focus
A Focus like Sleep or Study can set its own Limits level while it is on, through a Focus Filter in the system Settings app. Your chosen level returns when the Focus ends, and the Limits screen shows a notice while an override is in force.
Stats
Lifetime
Total posts filtered.
Highest Month
Your biggest month, with its name.
This Year
With the percent change against last year.
This Month
With the percent change against last month.
Activity chart
Filtering over time.
Share image
The share button builds an image holding the same four stats and the activity chart, and hands it to the share sheet for Messages, Photos, or anywhere else.
Counts add up across devices
Each device keeps its own count and publishes it to iCloud, and the Stats screen sums them, so one device’s history never overwrites another’s. Not signed in to iCloud? Stats still record on that device and stay there.
Privacy and syncing
No account
You never sign up for anything to use Protego.
No tracking
No browsing history is collected.
Your filter lists stay yours
They live on your devices and in your own iCloud, not on a server of mine. Syncing happens in the background, even with the app closed, and deletions stick across devices.
Only error reports leave your device
They go through Sentry so I can find and fix crashes and bugs. They carry a random ID generated on your device that identifies no person, and they never include what you browse, what you filter, or anything you type.
Nothing is removed from Reddit
Filtered posts are hidden from your view. Nobody is notified.
Platforms and the rest of the app
iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro
All four on a single purchase.
One-time price
No subscription.
Works on both new and old Reddit
Filtering and the layout settings apply to either one.
English, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese
Across the app, the Safari popup, and the menus Protego adds on Reddit.
Safari popup
Add a keyword or flip a filter from the toolbar without leaving the page.
Buttons on Reddit
A shield button on posts, comments, community sidebars, and profiles lets you filter that community or author without opening the app. Each of the four surfaces can be switched off.
Guides and a welcome tour
Built into the app: what each filter type matches, the wildcard rules and per-keyword limits with worked examples, what the four stats mean and how they sync, and a replayable tour for getting set up.
What’s New
A screen listing what changed in each release.
Built for VoiceOver
Controls are announced properly, and contrast was raised throughout.
Shortcuts and Focus support
Through App Intents.
What Protego does not do
Protego reads text: post titles, bodies, community and author names, and link addresses. It cannot read words inside an image or a video.
A few settings are new Reddit only: Award buttons, Achievement badges, Community & author avatars, Comment avatars, Community status emoji, Community banners, Join buttons, and Reddit Answers.
Achievement badge pills next to usernames are English-language Reddit only for now.
If you have the official Reddit app installed, Safari draws its own Smart App Banner above Reddit pages. That is Safari chrome, outside the page, so no extension can hide it.
Disable For You feed is experimental and depends on Reddit’s ongoing test.
