Filter Reddit by keyword

Hide posts that mention a word or a pattern, across your feeds, community pages, and search results.

Some words follow you around Reddit: the ending of a book you are halfway through, a topic that turns every thread into the same argument. Add one to your keywords and it stops reaching your feed, without muting a community you otherwise like. Protego filters rather than blocks, so switching the keyword back off brings everything with it.

Add a keyword and know what it catches

A keyword matches a post’s title, its body, and the community it was posted in, whatever the capitalization. It matches whole words, so wand catches a post about a wand and leaves wandmaker alone. Filtering runs everywhere you scroll: feeds, community pages, search results, and profiles.

Read a filtered post when you want to

Opening a post always shows it in full, however it was caught. You went there on purpose. A community’s page works the same way: once you are inside it, keywords stop matching on the community’s name, so a keyword that shares that name does not empty the page you chose to open.

Catch partial words and age tags

* stands for any text, at either end of a keyword or both: politic* catches political and politics, *wand* catches wandmaker. # stands for a number up to three digits, so [#m] catches age tags and leaves [album] alone. Communities take * too, while users and domains match in full.

The keyword composer offers the terms trending in your region, each one a tap to add, so the story everyone is posting about today is gone before it fills your feed. They are fetched about once a day and cached on device, and the request carries a coarse region code and nothing of yours. A term your keywords already catch is never offered.

Start from the ready-made Dating groups

A pre-filled keyword group for dating posts, Men or Women, for when you want the whole category gone and would rather not think of the words yourself. Every member was reviewed before it went in.

Filter a word without leaving the page

The Protego button in Safari’s toolbar carries its own keyword composer, so a word you just ran into is filtered where you ran into it. Type one and tap Preview instead of Add: the page behind the popup marks what it would hide and counts the matches, before you commit.

How to turn these on

  1. Open Protego and go to the Filter tab.
  2. Tap Keywords, then the add button.
  3. Type the word or pattern and save it. You can also add one from the Protego button in Safari’s toolbar without leaving the page.
