Filter Reddit by user
Everything one account posts stops reaching you: their posts in feeds and search, their comments in every thread.
Sometimes it is not a topic. It is a person, and you can tell how a thread will go the moment you see their name on it. Filtering that account is the quiet way out: you keep the communities you both read, and the threads there stop turning into the same argument. Change your mind and switching the filter off brings back every word of theirs.
Add a user, and only that user
A user filter matches the account name exactly, whatever the capitalization:
padfoot hides u/padfoot and nobody else, not u/padfoot2 and not u/thepadfoot.
Keywords take wildcards; a name has to match in
full. Their posts stop turning up in your feeds, on community pages, and in
search results, while their profile still shows them, because you went there on
purpose.
Hide a user’s comments and the replies under them
Every user filter arrives with comment filtering switched on, set per user. That account’s comments stop showing on comment pages, and because Reddit nests replies inside the comment they answer, the replies underneath go too, other people’s included. Switch the option off for a user whose comments you would rather keep reading.
Filter a name the moment you see it
The decision to filter an account almost always happens mid-thread. The Protego button on a post or a comment filters whoever wrote it, adding the account exactly as the app does, comment filtering included. The post or comment you acted on is hidden straight away, button and all, so undo lives on their profile, which stays visible.
Choose filtering or Reddit’s own block
Filtering a user only changes what you see. It does not block the account on Reddit, it does not stop them replying to you or contacting you, and nobody is notified. When you need any of that, blocking is Reddit’s own feature and lives on Reddit: how Reddit blocking works.
Pause a user filter without deleting it
An account you might want back later does not have to be deleted. Users is one of your filter lists, so every entry carries its own Enabled switch. Switch one off and that account’s posts and comments come back, while the entry stays in the list for the next time you want it.
