Protego 3.0: A Whole New Protego

Communities, users, one-tap presets, Limits, controls on Reddit itself, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, and a redesign. 3.0 is the biggest update yet.

Protego 3.0 is out on the App Store, and it is the biggest update yet.

Keywords were only the beginning. Protego now filters whole communities and individual users too, and a Protego button on Reddit itself lets you filter a community without leaving the page. One-tap Transform presets clear away the clutter, and the new Limits can put Reddit’s feeds out of reach entirely. Nearly everything you can see is new, the app now speaks Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, and it is much more reliable underneath.

As always: no account, no tracking, and your lists stay in your own iCloud.

Filter more than keywords

  • Communities and users. Hide everything from a community, one person’s posts and comments, or block access to a community. There are lists for link domains and social media links too, so posts pointing at X, Instagram, TikTok, and more can go as well.
  • Keyword groups. Gather keywords under one name for easier management and switch them all off at once.
  • Keyword suggestions. Pull terms trending in your region, or add a ready-made Men or Women group for dating posts.
  • A new pattern. # matches any 1 to 3 digit number, so [#m] hides [30m] and [18m]. It joins *, which matches a word and its variations.
  • Pause instead of delete. Switch any filter off without deleting it.

One tap instead of thirty settings

Transform presets apply a recommended set of options in one tap. Off, Minimal, Balanced, and Focused strip out distractions and bring new Reddit closer to the old one, and everything stays adjustable afterward.

The clutter controls got deeper at the same time: new options hide thumbnails, avatars, flair, badges, vote controls, award and join buttons, community banners, Reddit Answers, recommendations, and login and app nudges. Comments carrying media, and the moderator comment pinned to the top of a thread, can arrive collapsed or hidden. An experimental option even skips Reddit’s For You home test and returns you to Following.

Limits put Reddit out of reach

Filtering hides what you don’t want to see. Limits go further and block Reddit itself, a step at a time: Home and Popular first, then all main feeds, then everything but direct links to posts, then all of Reddit. Pair a limit with a Focus like Sleep or Study and it applies itself, then steps back down when the Focus ends.

Filter without leaving Reddit

A Protego control now sits on posts, comments, community sidebars, and profiles. Filter that community or author in one tap and keep reading. If you would rather not see the control on some surface, turn it off there in Settings.

Everything else

  • Reliable syncing. Your changes reach your other devices on their own, even with the app closed.
  • Faster filtering. The filtering engine was rebuilt and optimized to clear pages sooner.
  • Wider coverage. Filtering now reaches the news feed, Rising and Best listings, highlight carousels, single comment pages, and crossposts.
  • Accurate stats. A rebuilt counting engine that adds up across your devices, on a redesigned Stats screen with a shareable card.
  • Redesigned app. Reorganized navigation, a restyled interface with Liquid Glass, and a new icon on every platform.
  • Rebuilt Safari popup. Redesigned to match the app, and streamlined for quickly adding a keyword.
  • Two new languages. Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, across the app, the popup, and the menus on Reddit.
  • Built for VoiceOver. Controls are announced properly, and contrast was raised throughout.
  • A tip jar. I build Protego in my free time, and if it has made your Reddit calmer, a tip toward the next coffee means a lot.

There are hundreds of smaller fixes across the app, the extension, and the Safari popup too. Three worth calling out: deleting a keyword now brings its posts back, deletions no longer resurface from another device, and importing a list reports the real count of what was added.

Protego 3.0 is one purchase on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, and it is a free update if you already own it. Get it on the App Store, and if anything looks off, support is right here.
